If Biden can say – I’m tired of being quiet – then so can I!
The NYTimes has an article today that talks about Biden and changing congressional rules on filibusters. Presently 60% is required to make changes. This would mean that 60% of elected officials representing citizens would be require to change laws.
Seems reasonable to me – and it has worked for a very long time to ensure laws are passed by a large majority.
BUT – within the same article in defense of changes in voter laws there is a story of an incident in Georgia:
“We had hoped he would have used his bully pulpit a long time ago for voting rights and we wouldn’t be at this critical junction,” said Helen Butler, a Black Democrat who was removed from a local election board in Morgan County, Georgia, after a state law gave Republicans more power over such appointments.
This begs the question – Georgia passed laws giving the majority party the right to make changes to existing laws and make new laws. BUT – their laws didn’t specifically say “Republicans” – which means – if Georgia were controlled by the Democratic Party – then the majority party would be able to “appoint” whomever they believe would best serve the citizens.
When someone is removed from a Local Election Board – that means the majority in control of the board makes decisions on whom they want. (The laws don’t say which political party, or race – they just say – majority can appoint!)
So why use such a story about voter rights? This seems more about twisting the situation to fit the agenda of those who want to make changes – but are not in the majority.
Remember – If not for California and NY – Trump had more popular vote than Biden – so where is the “Clear Majority” in which the “people” want to remove the filibuster?
If the Democratic Political Party can develop a good presentation to the public on why changes are needed (rather than having media twist scenarios) – then maybe the public would agree. Then the public can communicate with their elected official (No matter which party they belong to) – and ask them to change the laws.
Just because there is a loud voice from certain segments of society and the Media’s agenda is a concerted effort to stifle states rights, does not mean a majority of the public is dissatisfied with how elections are being held in every state.
Remember – Voting is a State’s Right. We vote within our State for representation. Most US citizens have the right to vote – but how they vote must be managed by every State. And that means – the majority of each state makes laws for voting.
Voting should NOT be a Federal issue for individual rights – The States should continue to have the Right to establish voting laws.
