I’m all for Family! – I believe everyone has the right to have children.
But I also believe in responsibility for those children. That means for their entire life! You don’t stop being a parent when things get rough, or when your children turn 18/21 (Depending on your philosophy of when someone should become an “adult”)
What I don’t believe in – is using MY TAX MONEY to pay people for having children. I pay a fair share every year (more than many people) – for roads, schools, medical, environment, justice, education, etc., etc.
BUT why do I have to pay families to have children? – Roughly 36 Million families are provided a “Tax” Credit for every child, and this year they are provide an additional “Cash” (not deduction on taxes) boost of some $300 per month for 6 months (July-Dec 2021). Part of the “American Rescue Plan Act”
The Child Tax credit is now $3,600 per child under 6 (Family with 3 children is $10,800 credit per year. ($3000, for ages 6-17)
And, if you make over $150,000 AGI – your will not get the full amount.
NOTE: The Biden Admin has instructed the IRS to make the cash directly deposited to families accounts. (Think about this – now the IRS will have every families bank accounts – do you think they aren’t going to monitor those they wish to see if they have more cash flows than they should?)
There is also a program not many people know about – this is the “Non-earner” IRS filing – for those who don’t make money (or have reportable income) to file so they may directly receive all the Government giveaways.
SNAP,
Child Credits,
Health Care programs,
CHIP -medical and dental for under 17,
Vouchers for Housing,
LIHEAP – Low Income Home Energy Program,
SSI – Did you know if overweight you qualify for SS Disability pay?, TANF – which pays more if you have more children,
Head Start programs,
Pell Grants for Higher Education,)
Each of these programs are needed by many people for various reasons.
BUT – if we pay people to have more children, who are then born into poverty – what chance do they have for moving out of poverty? – Isn’t this the reason why some 50 Million people are considered poor in the US?
Presently a Family of 5 (2 parents, 3 Children or 1 & 4) making under $31,040 – are considered living in Poverty. (Used for determining Medicaid and CHIP eligibility)
Now this is amazing since the “Median Income” of the United States is $19,306. (There are many people with very low incomes!)
And yet, if you add up all the government provided services (for example what Medical Facilities charge insurance companies for services, what people with income have to pay for various services – ie. what each person pays in taxes for all the various government provides services) – These individuals are NOT that poor – comparatively to years prior to these Social Services being offered. And compared to the rest of the world (Which is a reason people are dying to enter the US)
For example, the Median Income in Portugal is $8,439 (in US$) Guatemala is $2,036.
Thus, the $3,600 per child tax credit is more than the median income of many people around the world (Mexico annual median income is $3,315 (in US$))
The next question – what is the “cash” being spent on? Can the Federal Govt unequivocally state that all the “Child Credit” is being spent on children’s needs? And what are the real needs? Of course the Feds can’t monitor all 36Million Families – that is unless they have access to their bank accounts and are able to data analyze cash flows and where money is being spent. (Yes they can – if Biden’s law passes!)
Maybe – we should simply get away from Income Tax? – Have a 25% GST (Government Supplement Tax) on all purchases (This would make government budget on public demand – both up and down economies. Presently there are about $100 Trillion in non-cash transactions in the US. ).
Then all money being sent out to citizens would be Specific based on USE PURPOSE – not income levels. (That would be fair – because isn’t a child a child?)
We could all still file with the IRS – but not be charged income taxes – the data would simply be used to determine eligibility for Social Services paid for by Demand Spending.
Supporting Families to help them raise/teach their children to be honest, educated, and responsible – that is the objective is it not? Does giving families more “cash” when they have more children going achieve this objective?
