Since I love me some data!
I figured everyone should consider adjusting their attitude towards Political Control. Democracy is about a majority working together with everyone for the better of all involved.
First: 2020 President Election
The Electoral College (which is the only vote Congress considers!) was 306-232 This looks like a landslide yet the data must be evaluated. All but a few states provide 100% of Electoral votes for the candidate that receives the majority of votes in the State election.
Thus, if the State voted 80% – 20% – they get 100% of the electoral votes. Or, if the State voted 50.1% to 49.9% – they get 100% of the electoral votes. Democracy!
But does this mean a Mandate to change all laws and regulations? – Of course not! Remember – majority working together with others?
Perspective – the Total Votes (Which really don’t mean anything because our country is called “United States” – which means the 50 States run each of their own elections) – Anyway –
Biden 81,283,098
Trump 74,222,958
Again looks like a big win – BUT – if you remove just 2 of 50 states from the totals (CA & NY) you have
Biden 64,927,962
Trump 64,964,532 Hmmm – Trump had more votes!
Sure – you can’t remove states totals – but again – the National Vote means nothing – so lets look at the various states
Biden had 13 states where he received more than 55% of the votes
Trump had 17 states where he received more than 55% of the votes
BUT – in the end – both received a majority of votes in 25 States
This would either mean either 1) The US beliefs are closer to being the same than different, or 2) The country has a complete split on important issues.
Think about this – in some states the vote was less than 2.5% different – does this mean mandate?
Now, if the Electoral College gave their votes based on % of their states elections – there may be a different President in the White House today.
And, while many people want the Total National Votes to control the election – I propose this would alienate more people – as proven above – NY and CA would control the entire country. And that would not be good!
The Electoral College works – but there may be more states moving towards shared votes within their state – based on % of state Votes per candidate.
Since 1830s States, (and DC) by statute, appoint all electors to the party that wins the state’s majority vote. The exception is Main and Nebraska that allocate by the winners of their congressional districts, plus two at large electors for the state’s total popular vote. Of course remember only 29 states require electors to vote for whom the state pledges. (Which likely would not be held up in court) The other state’s the electors could vote for whomever they wished.
Now the real issue – State Political Parties control who is on the State’s Ballots, and designates its own set of electors based on how many the Federal Government designates per state. (Presently based on US Census data – which changes every 10 years)
Note: By the way – both California and New York – lost electoral votes (and Congressional Seats) due to the population decreases in the 2020 census!
Again – this shows how the National Popular total vote is moot. The real elections are based on grass roots state political parties and who is chosen by the parties to be electors.
By the way – since the states were 25-25: a majority winner is not guaranteed in the Congress either. The states could feasibly split their votes equally between 2 candidates (25 state votes each) or the votes could be split between three candidates in such a way that no candidate receives a majority.
Also, since every state only gets one vote, the representatives from each state must come to a decision on which candidate to support in the House. A state with an equal number of representatives supporting the competing parties would not be able to cast its vote unless one representative agreed to vote for the opposing side.
